MEET THE TRAINER

Lead Trainer Bethany Matheson

Bethany graduated from Vanderbilt University’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, and is currently practicing in TN as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Registered Yoga Teacher. She specializes in complex trauma work with children and adults using somatic-based therapy and EMDR. Her EMDR journey began when she was in grad school, so she’s never been a therapist without it! She loves helping other therapists move through their own anxiety about using EMDR with clients, and she is a great fit for those looking for a somatic focus with all ages.

COURSE CONTENT

ABSTRACT

In its purest form, EMDR is already a comprehensive approach to regulating the nervous system. Many therapists understand this conceptually, but feel discomfort integrating somatic work into their therpeutic practice. Riding the Wave: Foundations of Somatic EMDR Therapy is a 4.0-hour course providing introductory somatic interventions. This course aims to increase clinician comfort and competency utilizing somatic focused language and tools, taught by an EMDR trainer and registered yoga teacher. While revisiting all eight phases of EMDR, clinicians will participate in enhancements to their basic protocol with an emphasis on moving through somatic material and finding peace and resolution in the body.

OBJECTIVES

  • Review & demonstrate knowledge of the unfdamentals of EMDR, including the AIP model, 3-prong approach, and the 8 phases
  • Develop knowledge of foundational principles of somatic-based therapies and scope of practice
  • Develop knowledge of the need for integrative somatic practices in the context of EMDR therapy
  • Demonstrate basic somatic skills in each of the 8 phases of EMDR therapy
